Key Campaigns
Clean Environment Campaign in Korogocho
ACORN Kenya have mobilized residents in Korogocho, Nairobi’s largest informal settlement, to address the lack of designated garbage disposal sites causing serious public health issues including illness and drainage blockages that contributed to flooding. Led by ACORN leaders Asha Abdi and Halima Osman, community members confronted the Ward Manager’s office, securing a meeting and commitments to support their campaign under the slogan “Mazingira Safi Ni Haki Yetu!” (A Clean Environment is Our Right!).
Major Community Cleanup Initiative
ACORN Kenya has been organizing an impressive cleanup campaign in Korogocho that brought together over 150 participants. Through weekly committee meetings, they built a powerful coalition involving multiple stakeholders including Red Cross, Green Army, Climate Workers, Community Health Promoters, and numerous community-based organizations (Koch Hope CBO, Shivam CBO, Elephant CBO, SanSiro CBO, Ayiera Initiative, GB Reformers, Grogon CBO). The campaign raised awareness about proper garbage management while advocating for regular collection services from the County Government. ACORN Kenya members demonstrated their organizing power by preparing and delivering a unanimous petition to government offices.
Anti-Gender-Based Violence Campaign
Following a concerning increase in gender-based violence (GBV) in Korogocho, ACORN Kenya initiated meetings for affected women and their allies, building support through trainings and solidarity. This effort culminated in a public demonstration with over 100 participants marching to local police offices, demanding clear and strict repercussions for perpetrators of gender-based violence.
