ACORN Sicily

ACORN Sicily started in December 2025 with a group of residents from central Catania, Sicily’s second largest city, who organized to confront the redevelopment and gentrification of their neighborhood, Civita.
Civita is a historic, working class district, long home to small shopkeepers and fishermen, and more recently a hub for the Muslim community.
The municipality is redesigning the neighborhood to make it trendy for tourists arriving at the port, at the expense of the balance and basic services that are essential to residents’ daily lives. Furthermore, these interventions inevitably drive up short term rentals, accelerating the neighborhood’s depopulation.

Within just a few months, the group organized some 50 residents and began challenging public officials to assert the fundamental rights of Civita’s residents. Through direct confrontation and grassroots outreach, such as distributing leaflets and going door to door, they made the neighborhood’s walls and the entire city speak out, declaring that residents would not stand idly by in the face of injustice.
ACORN Sicily is actively seeking members, volunteers, and organizers who want to build power through collective action to address the issues facing low and moderate income Sicilians. The organization is in its formative stages and welcomes anyone interested in being part of this growing movement.
We have already achieved significant victories, but we will not stop until those in power understand that decisions about us cannot be made without us.
