Hawkers Joint Action Committee
The idea of Hawkers Joint Action Committee (HJAC) is simple: a collective organization for street vendors and hawkers. The organization aims to empower hawkers and street vendors through unity, collective action, and grassroots advocacy. HJAC recognizes the daily challenges faced by hawkers across India: harassment by authorities, lack of designated vending zones, insecurity of livelihood, and encroachment on traditional vending spaces. Many of their members have experienced these struggles firsthand.
HJAC believes that the only way to overcome these challenges – from municipal corporations, police, and unsympathetic policies – is to get organized collectively, NOT just on an individual basis. The organization strongly believes that real power lies in the hands of ordinary people – hawkers, street vendors, and the communities they serve – and meaningful change can only come when they act together.
Their vision is of an organization in cities and towns across India, uniting street vendors in a coordinated struggle on issues they all share. And HJAC is determined to succeed.
