ACORN India came into existence when in March 2005 the stage was set by the work ACORN International was doing in partnership with the FDI Watch campaign in India. ACORN India FDI Watch seeks to scrutinize and challenge Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector in India. ACORN India seeks to prevent large multi-national companies like Wal-Mart from entering Indian markets unless they guarantee protection of communities they affect; ensure stability of the existing small businesses and ensure livelihoods of small traders; guarantee fair wages, just working conditions and a right to unionize to all their employees; and ensure that a significant portion of the supplies comes from the Indian markets.     Report from Delhi (January to April 2011)

    Membership of ACORN- 83 new members enrolled (mostly rickshaw pullers and ragpickers)

    Homeless Shelter– ACORN with its local partner is managing a Govt. sponsored temporary shelter for homeless. On an average, more than 50 homeless (mostly rickshaw pullers) are using the shelter to escape from extreme weather. All users have become member of ACORN. Membership card of ACORN has been issued to all of them.

    Dues Collection-A total of INR 3600/- has been collected from members as dues.

    Other financial support-Delhi Govt. support of INR. 6000/- per month going to the ACORN organizer as part of salary from December 2010 till now.
    Campaign-ACORN joined other organizations to ensure counting of homeless in the national census of 2011 (census is carried out after each decade since 1871 to help formulate states policy and programmes. ACORN worked closely with census authorities and consequently authorities visited its night shelter and camped for the whole night to enroll all users of the shelter.
    FDI Watch Forum-successfully lobbied with political forces and met many important national politicians and policy makers to thwart American and European Govt. and corporates’ attempts to liberalise retail trade in India. It organised a meeting with European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and took them to street markets to help them understand ground realities of India. It paid back and the EESC endorsed our concerns and demanded European Parliament and European Commission to commission studies on likely impact on informal workers particularly street vendors.

    The centre is running in partnership with a local non-profit agency and the cooperation of the Delhi Municipal Corporation. 
    45,000 people are still dispossessed since those games and ACORN is organizing these families here and in the surrounding neighborhood.

    		Ese día llovía y se dificulto un poco, pero a pesar de ello nos comprometimos a iniciar con el proyecto.

    		 Asistieron 10 adultos y 20 niños. Entre todos limpiamos el terreno en donde se llevara a cabo el proyecto.
    22 de marzo de 2011 Se termino de firmar la carta para llevar a la municipalidad, surgió la idea de una feria comunitaria. 2 miembros Fue una visita que se hizo en la casa de una de los miembros.

    		 Asistieron 8 miembros adultos y 18 niños Por ser feriado largo las personas adultas que asistieron fueron pocas.
    28 de marzo de 2011 Tuvimos una nueva voluntaria.

    Una chica de Estados Unidos, California que se dispuso por 1 mes a dictar talleres de inglés a los niños.

    Cuarto taller,

     

    Consejos para el cuidado del medioambiente, presentación de los chicos que harán visualizaciones con ellos.

    Asistieron 12 miembros adultos y 24 miembros niños.

    Se eligió el tamaño de las botellas con el que haremos nuestra primera construcción que será una banca.
    2 de abril de 2011 Le llevamos a regalar un mercado (alimentos) a una de los miembros de la organización. Lo hicimos por la necesidad que tienen estas personas, es una manera de ayudarlos y de que ellos se comprometan más con lo que hacemos.

     

    El lunes iremos a la municipalidad en donde buscaremos los papeles del terreno (que sea comunitario), el día miércoles formaremos la junta directiva y al tiempo se iniciaran con las clases de inglés para los niños, El Club Acorn. Además se llevara una carta para entregarla al encargado de la plaza en donde se hará la Feria de comida y ropa usada. El 9 de abril haremos nuestra primera feria para recolectar fondos.
